SfakiaSky Stories: 4. Vertical Run

Sunday, October 27 is the second day of the Sfakia Sky competition. Traditionally, on this day we run the Vertical on the route from Loutro to Anopoli. The tradition of this vertical is much older than the tradition of the marathon distance. This year, the Sfakia Vertical Run will be held for the 10th time, so we have a small anniversary.
We only have 4.7 km to run and 680 m to the top. The start – just like the day before – directly from the ferry, a 680-meter ascent on a fairly comfortable path following the former kalderimi, one food station along the way (together with a cheering point), ringing the bell in the church of Agia Ekaterini at the highest point of the route and a short descent to Anapoli to the finish line. The whole thing will take you about an hour (unless you are very fast, then less).
The perfect route for those who are still afraid of a long distance in the mountains, or for those for whom the marathon distance from Saturday is not enough, because they like two-day challenges. As a reward, amazing views of the Libyan Sea and Loutrο. And plenty of SOLO beer and the pilafi party at the end of the race as well.
For those who want to challenge records, we remind you that the absolute record holder of this route is Γιωργος Διαλεκτος, who in 2019 ran our vertical in 33 m 16 s (!) Among women, the best result can be boasted by Χριστίνα Γιατζιτζίδου 37m 23s in 2021. The best results last year were: Θοδωρής Τσολάκης 36m 01s and @Maria Papapostolou 44m 37s.
Chapeau bas!
